The Colts’ season didn’t play out as expected in 2024. Anthony Richardson struggled to stay in the lineup and struggled with consistency when he was on the field. That led to the Colts missing the playoffs, again. This off-season, the focus was on adding some competition. Daniel Jones is in and is vying for the starting job with Richardson. Who wins, and how they do, will shape the season for the Colts. Let’s dive in.
Off-Season Changes
The Colts saw veteran Joe Flacco leave and return to the Cleveland Browns. Veteran running back Trey Sermon went to the Steelers, while tight end Kylen Granson left for a contract with the Eagles. On defense, tackle Taven Bryant left for the Cincinnati Bengals. Meanwhile, the Colts saw long-time pieces of the offensive line depart. Ryan Kelly left for the Minnesota Vikings, as did guard Will Fries.
The team added Jones as a quarterback to compete for the starting job. With the Giants, Jones went for 14,852 yards and 70 touchdowns, completing just over 64 percent of his passes. The team also added Khalil Herbert to the backfield. But one of the biggest additions came in the draft, where the team snagged tight end Tyler Warren in the First Round. Warren caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards last season for Penn State.
Fantasy Impact
Who will it be at quarterback? Jones has gotten the nod and will apparently get a long leash. I suspect we’ll see Richardson at some point, too. Neither is more than a QB3 for me. I do love Jonathan Taylor in the backfield. He was RB12 despite missing three games. I think he’s an RB1, could be a Top 6 guy.
In the passing game, the Colts have an embarrassment of riches. The receiving group includes Michael Pittman, Jr., Josh Downs, Adonai Mitchell, and Alec Pierce. And the team added a weapon in Warren at tight end. But the passing game is far from a sure thing. I have Warren as a TE2. I think Pittman will be the top receiver, probably in the low-end WR3 range while Downs finishes in the WR4 range. I like Mitchell still for Dynasty, but he and Pierce aren’t likely to get enough consistent volume.
The Bottom Line
The Colts have been trying to make it work since Andrew Luck retired. They tried a series of veteran quarterbacks that didn’t work. Richardson, taken at No. 3 overall, was supposed to be the answer. He hasn’t been that, and I don’t think he will be that. The Colts are missing a massive piece, and I think that will take a toll. The Colts feel like a team that is likely to bottom out somewhat in 2025.
