The Houston Texans had an up-and-down 2024 season, battling injuries at key positions across the offense. But the teams still did enough to win the AFC South and make it into the playoffs. The Texans even pushed the Chiefs before going out in the playoffs. Now, the question is what they can do in C.J. Stroud’s third year at the helm.

Off-Season Changes

Last year the Texans brought in Stefon Diggs to bolster the receiving group, but they saw him leave this off-season for the Patriots. The also saw veteran receiver Robert Woods depart for the Steelers and veteran quarterback Case Keenum depart for the Bears. Defensively, Devin White moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders and cornerback Jeff Okuda signed with the Minnesota Vikings. The team also traded left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Commanders.

The Texans did re-load, too. They traded for Jaguars’ receiver Christian Kirk to bolster the receiving group and signed free agent Nick Chubb. Chubb rushed for 6,843 yards and 51 yards in seven seasons with the Browns. The team bolstered the offensive line, too, signing Trent Brown at right tackle and Cam Robinson at left tackle. Defensively, the team added lineman Mario Edwards, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, and cornerback Ronald Darby.

In the draft, the Texans worked to improve the receiver group. They spent a Second-Round pick on Jayden Higgins. He caught 140 passes for 2,166 yards and 15 touchdowns in two seasons at Iowa State. The team also spent a Third-Round pick on slot receiver Jaylin Noel. Later in the draft, the Texans took running back Woody Marks to bolster the backfield.

Fantasy Impact

Stroud is locked in as the starting quarterback. He was a QB2 in 2024 thanks to the rotating injuries at receiver. There are some options there this year, but I still think Stroud is a solid QB2. The backfield has questions, too. Joe Mixon was great in 2024 but he’s already dealing with an injury. He’s likely to miss the beginning of the season, paving the way for Chubb to have a lead role to start. I think Mixon ends up the best back on the roster, but as an RB3. I think Chubb ends up an RB4.

In the passing game, I like Nico Collins as the top option, and a potential WR1 as long as he stays healthy. Tank Dell’s late season injury means he’s likely out for the season. That leaves the veteran Kirk, and rookies Higgins and Noel in the mix. I think all will have their moments, but I like Higgins the best for dynasty and re-draft. Still, he’s probably a WR4 at best. At tight end, Dalton Schultz is solid and should be a TE2.

The Bottom Line

The Texans have been atop the AFC South the past two years. They’re a good team with a good roster and a good coach. I don’t think the Texans are flashy, nor will they take the league by surprise, but I think they’ll be a solid playoff team.
