The 2024 season started hot for the Saints. They moved to 2-0 and exploded on offense. But after that, injuries took their toll. Derek Carr missed most of the season, and the Saints fell flat without him. Soon, many others joined Carr on the injury list. The team stumbled to a Fourth-Place finish in the division, well out of the playoffs. Now, Dennis Allen is gone and it’s up to Kellen Moore to get the Saints back on track. Let’s dive in.

Off-Season Changes

In addition to seeing a big shift in the coaching staff, the Saints saw Carr retire. That leaves them with a young and unproven room to take his place. Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, one of the few bright spots late in the season, followed Offensive Coordinator Klint Kubiak to the Seattle Seahawks. The team also saw defenders Payton Turner and Willie Gay, Jr. depart in free agency.

The Saints made a few moves in the off-season. The team added Chase Young and Julian Blackmon on defense. On offense, the team added veteran tackle Andrus Peat and veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks. In the draft, the team spent a First-Round pick on tackle Kelvin Banks, Jr., then a Second-Round pick on quarterback Tyler Shough. Shough had a long college career, playing seven seasons for Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville. It was marred by injuries, but he brings plenty of experience.

Fantasy Impact

The quarterback battle seems to be between Shough and second-year man Spencer Rattler, who went 0-7 in 2024. Whoever wins, I suspect both will play during the season. I don’t think either is more than a low-end QB3. In the backfield, Alvin Kamara was RB2 through Week 15 when he got injured, averaging 19 fantasy points per game. He’s a high-end RB2 for me with upside. Kendre Miller is finally out of Allen’s doghouse but is he ready to contribute. He’s a roster flier for me.

In the passing game, Chris Olave has struggled with concussions, while Rashid Shaheed went out with a leg injury. Both are back, along with Cooks. But with an inconsistent quarterback situation, Olave is a WR3 for me. Shaheed is a WR4, and Cooks is a low-end flex option. Tight end Juwan Johnson is back and could be steady for a young quarterback. He’s a low-end TE2 for me.

The Bottom Line

The Saints were bad in 2024, but I don’t think they’ve hit bottom yet. This isn’t a great roster and I think the Saints will be one of the worst, if not the worst, team in 2025. That doesn’t bode well for fans but earning the No. 1 overall pick might start the path back to relevancy.
