My Oxford Year follows a girl called Anna, played by Sofia Carson, who travels from New York City to Oxford to study at the university for a year. While she’s there, she meets a boy called Jamie played by Corey Mylchreest. They don’t get off to the best start and have an argument early on — but soon after, Anna finds out that Jamie is actually her teacher. Things get more complicated from there, and eventually, she falls in love with him. But just as their relationship is growing stronger, she finds out that Jamie is seriously unwell, which changes everything.

The film is a romance with some funny moments throughout. It also shows off lots of locations around Oxford, which I liked. I enjoyed the movie for what it was — a sweet, emotional romance — but I did feel like I’d seen this kind of story before. It felt a bit predictable in places, and it didn’t help that I had watched another upcoming romance film around the same time that had a similar storyline. Because of that, some parts didn’t hit as hard as they probably should have. That said, the cast had great chemistry. Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest worked well together, and there’s also a funny romance subplot between two of the side characters that I enjoyed. It added a bit of lightness to balance out the more emotional parts.

One thing that stood out to me was the fashion in the film. The characters sometimes wore everyday casual outfits, but there were also scenes where boys and girls would wear smart outfits and suits and shiny shoes. A funny scene in this film is where two characters dress in costumes for a costume party one dresses up as a superhero and the other dresses up in a period pice outfit. I also liked Anna’s boots.  Throughout the film, characters comment on the outfits which I liked. This contrast added to the film’s atmosphere.  The film also had some emotional scenes that made you feel for the characters, especially toward the end. It’s not a super original story, but it has heart, and it’s enjoyable to watch if you’re in the mood for something romantic with a bit of drama and comedy mixed in.

My Oxford Year did have one thing that I wish had been clearer for the final scene of the film. It felt a bit disappointing that they didn’t clarify a particular part, making it difficult to understand what happened to a certain characters, despite the film showing us what happened in the future I would have liked them to clarify what happened in that moment.

Overall, My Oxford Year is a fun and emotional romance film with great characters, nice scenery, and includes romance, humour, sadness, and friendship.
