We Were Liars is based on the book by E.Lockhart and follows Cadence, a girl whose wealthy family spends their summers at one of their luxurious beach houses. The family is very posh, rich, and well-known in the public eye. Cadence is best friends with Gat, Johnny, and Mirren. They spend a lot of time together on the island, and slowly, Cadence realises she has feelings for Gat. The show has a time jump and we find out that Cadence has nearly died, but she can’t remember what happened. The rest of the story becomes a mystery, slowly uncovering the truth behind that summer.
We Were Liars is a fantastic show full of mystery, secrets, and more. The first episode feels like a fairy tale — everything is perfect and everyone is happy — but each episode gets darker as secrets begin to unravel. The cast is amazing, but Emily Alyn Lind stands out. She’s an extremely talented actress. The chemistry between the four main teens is great; they feel like close friends. There are many moments where they’re touchy and— hugging, relaxing together, cuddling, wrapping their legs around each other or sharing beach towels, it shows how close and loving their friendship is. The show jumps between different periods mainly before the big event and after. In the after, we see Cadence trying to piece together what happened, but each time she gets closer to the truth, she passes out or ends up back in the hospital. It’s hard to talk about this show without giving away spoilers, but there are many emotional moments where you feel for Cadence. She’s been through something traumatic, and you can see her confusion trying to understand what happened to her.
The show does a great job of making you connect with her. I also felt bad for her especially how someone she cares about ends up being part of the reason she’s hurting. It’s shocking because you’ve been rooting for them the whole time. The entire series has a summer vibe from the beach to the outfits and more One of the best things about this show is that there’s more than one twist. The first twist left me feeling a bit underwhelmed — I remember thinking, that’s all it was as It didn’t feel as shocking as I expected. But then the second twist came, and it completely shocked me. It changed everything I thought I knew about the story and the characters. It was also quite emotional and unexpected. The twist makes you want to rewatch the whole show from the start to see if you can spot clues.
We Were Liars did have some issues. There was one episode where I found the script a bit hard to follow, and I wish they had explained the family connections more clearly. With so many characters, it’s easy to forget who’s who and which kids belong to which parents. I also found the final scene a bit confusing — I get that it was setting up a possible second season, but it left me wondering if certain things were really happening or just in someone’s head.
Overall, We Were Liars is a great mystery-romance series with a fantastic cast and a fun, emotional story. I’m currently listening to the audiobook, narrated by Emily Alyn Lind, and I’m really enjoying it but have noticed she skips some of the Ts out of her sentences. Besides that she is a great narrator. I Highly recommend watching We Were Liars on Amazon Prime.
