The NFL Honors are coming, the time of year when the NFL hands out its awards for the 2024 season. The finalists in each category have been announced, with the winners selected during Super Bowl week. Below I look at each award and make my pick for who should win.
NFL MVP: Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
About: Look, I know Saquon isn’t going to win. He’s against quarterbacks Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jared Goff, and the likely winner Lamar Jackson. But let’s pretend for a minute we lived in a world where this award was handed out on merit. Barkley and his amazing season were a huge reason for the Eagles’ success. He was a difference maker. He’s the MVP.
AP Defensive Player of the Year: Patrick Surtain II, Denver Broncos
About: This award is really wide open. There are five talented players here who made a difference. I’m going with Surtain who is the only great player on an under-rated defensive unit. Yes, this is kind of a homer pick.
AP Offensive Player of the Year: Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
About: He should win both awards, but I think Barkley and his 2,000-plus rush yards are a lock to win this award. He had an amazing season.
AP Offensive Rookie of the Year: Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
About: This award is closer than you think. You could make a great case for Brock Bowers or Brian Thomas, Jr., who were both incredible as receivers this season on bad teams. I think there is also plenty of support for Bo Nix, who had some better numbers and did a great job of leading the Broncos back to the playoffs. But Daniels has been a front-runner all season and I think he’ll certainly take this win home.
AP Defensive Rookie of the Year: Jared Verse, Los Angeles Rams
About: This is another wide-open group, but the defensive resurgence was what helped the team make the post-season. Verse was a big driver in that, tasked with helping replace a Hall of Fame player in Aaron Donald. I think he gets the nod.
AP Comeback Player of the Year: Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
About: This could go to Sam Darnold, and I wouldn’t be shocked. But Burrow came back from injury and put up MVP numbers. The fact he’s in the finalist group for MVP is what puts him over-the-top for me.
AP Coach of the Year: Dan Quinn, Washington Commanders
About: I gave this a lot of thought. My heart wants to give this to Dan Campbell, who did an amazing job with a MASH Unit on defense to win 15 games. But Quinn took a team that had the No. 2 overall draft pick and got them to 12-5 and the playoffs. I think he gets the nod.
AP Assistant Coach of the Year: Joe Brady, Buffalo Bills
About: I’m legitimately sad that Vance Joseph didn’t make this list. What he did with the Broncos was incredible. But I’m going with Brady, who helped guide the Bills to that 13-4 mark with an offense that, outside of quarterback, was devoid of reliable stars. His work is really under-rated.
