Time Cut is directed by Hannah Macpherson (T@gged) and co-written by Macpherson and Michael Kennedy (Freaky), with Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day) as producer. As a fan of their previous work and the cast, I was excited for this film. Madison Bailey plays Lucy Field, whose sister Summer (Antonia Gentry) was murdered along with numerous other people before Lucy was born. Lucy is slightly depressed as she always feels in her sister’s shadow. Lucy discovers a time machine and is sent back to 2003. Here, her sister is alive. Will Lucy be able to stop her sister and friends from all being killed?

Time Cut was a fantastic film with a great story. Despite it being a slasher, it was clever at only showing the aftermath of kills and not being overly gory or scary. This film wasn’t just a slasher; the majority of the film is more of a drama. This added a unique take to films similar to this in the past. Although it has a fun tone, there was not much comedy, and the film could get pretty serious, emotional, and heartfelt at times.

When I was first introduced to the parents I found the mum very annoying and not likeable, but as the film went on I started to understand why she was the way she was; I found the film did a great job at showing the parents in both time periods and how much losing their child affected them. Time Cut was very tense as you couldn’t tell who would survive and who wouldn’t, but there are other reasons why it was tense.

One of the problems Lucy faces is deciding whether to save her sister—if she does, Lucy herself will never be born. These problems and surprises make for a great film. The cast has fantastic chemistry together, and I enjoyed the romance subplot in this film. The characters’ outfits were great, and I particularly liked the cherry top worn by Lucy. The movie also highlights the effects bullying has on people even years after the bullying happened.

The story could have been improved, as the killer’s motive felt somewhat muddled. I think the film could have done a better job of tying everything together. If you overanalyze it, the logic starts to fall apart. While the plot was relatively light, the film leaned heavily into drama. I would have liked to see more comedic moments to match the overall tone better. I also hoped for a romance between certain characters, but unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Time Cut was a fantastic film with great characters, story and cast. I hope we get a sequel in the future!
