The first two weeks of the NFL Season have produced some wild results and some fun finishes. Teams are starting to round into shape, and, despite a bevy of injuries, identities are starting to emerge. Week 3 of the NFL season presents some intriguing matchups and below are the five from the Sunday slate that have caught my attention.
Early Games:
Houston Texans (2-0) at Minnesota Vikings (2-0)
About: It’s not a surprise to see the Texans undefeated after two weeks, but I’m not sure many had the Vikings being perfect at this point. The team has settled in nicely with Sam Darnold and the offense has done enough to beat the Giants handily and handle business at home against the 49ers. Now, the team plays host to the Texans. The Texans have a loaded offense and designs on a deep playoff run. This is a matchup of two interesting young teams that should be one of Week 3’s best.
Los Angeles Chargers (2-0) at Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0)
About: My guess would be most people didn’t have these two listed as undefeated after two weeks. And yet, both have used a strong defense and a good running game to win. The Chargers are a work-in-progress, while the Steelers are still waffling between quarterback options. Sunday will be the Steelers’ home opener, and it figures to be an interesting atmosphere for the Chargers and their new-look offense. This probably won’t be a barnburner, but it could be a tight, competitive game.
Late Games:
Baltimore Ravens (0-2) at Dallas Cowboys (1-1)
About: There’s only one win between these two teams after two weeks. That’s not good for a couple of division winners who had some of the best records in football in 2023. The Ravens are coming off a surprising home loss to the Raiders, while the Cowboys got trucked by the Saints in Week 2. Both teams will be looking for the win and the Ravens may even be desperate to get back on track. This figures to be an interesting matchup.
Detroit Lions (1-1) at Arizona Cardinals (1-1)
About: Both these teams have beaten the Los Angeles Rams this season. Now, both will be looking for their first non-Rams victory. The Lions lost a tough one to the Buccaneers in Week 2, while the Cardinals showed out in their home opener. Now, the Cardinals will be looking to make it two straight while the Lions look to get back on track. There could be plenty of offense in this one.
Sunday Night Football:
Kansas City Chiefs (2-0) at Atlanta Falcons (1-1)
About: The Chiefs started 2-0 in their quest to win their third straight Super Bowl. The Falcons got a come-from-behind win over the Eagles in Week 2 to even their record. Kirk Cousins and the offense is still coming together, but the final drive showed progress. The Chiefs, meanwhile, will be adjusting to life without Isaih Pacheco, who is out with a broken leg. Can the Chiefs make it 3-0, or will the Falcons get a much-needed home win. This will be a good battle.
