The first week of the NFL Season is in the books. We got started with the Ravens and Chiefs last night, but that’s just the lead in to a full week of NFL Action. Below are five games from the pre-Monday slate that I’m excited to see in Week 1.
Friday Night:
Green Bay Packers vs Philadelphia Eagles
About: The NFL’s two-night kickoff continues as the Packers and Eagles meet in Brazil. The location of the game is interesting, but it’s the teams themselves that are compelling. Both were playoff teams in 2023 and both have playoff aspirations in 2024. Both would like to kick off the season with a win. The Packers loaded up on offense with Josh Jacobs in the backfield, while the Eagles added Saquon Barkley and new Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore. I’m excited to see both teams hit the field.
Sunday Early Games:
Pittsburgh Steelers vs Atlanta Falcons
About: This is one of the early window games on Sunday, and it’s compelling. The Steelers are trying to re-make their team with veteran Russell Wilson named starting quarterback. The Falcons, meanwhile, are starting the Raheem Morris era with a new quarterback in Kirk Cousins. The Falcons are at home and are looking to kick the season off with a win. I’m intrigued to see what both of these teams look like, which could have a big bearing on fantasy.
Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins
About: This is a battle of Florida and two teams who are hoping to be in the playoffs this year. It should be an interesting matchup to see if the Jaguars’ defense has improved and if the team’s offense has enough horsepower to keep up with the Dolphins. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are still trying to put their defensive front back together. They also have a stable of running backs and it will be interesting to see who rises to the top. This figures to be a good battle of Florida teams.
Sunday Late Games:
Dallas Cowboys vs Cleveland Browns
About: These are two teams whose fanbases want to see forward progress. They are also two teams that come in with a lot of questions. The Cowboys’ backfield is uncertain, and while they got CeeDee Lamb back in the fold, he missed all of camp. The Browns, meanwhile, added some receiving weapons this off-season and should still boast a good defense. But the question is Deshaun Watson, who has managed just 12 games in two seasons for the Browns. He’s already experiencing arm soreness, so it’s a question what he’ll look like on opening day.
Sunday Night Football:
Los Angeles Rams vs Detroit Lions
About: This is a re-match of the Wild Card playoff game, that again brings Matthew Stafford to Detroit to face his old team while Jared Goff hosts his former team. The Lions got the win in the playoffs and are hoping to repeat the feat as they kick off the new season. This is a great matchup to wrap up the first Sunday of NFL action.
