The 2024 NFL Season is rapidly approaching. The season kicks off on Thursday, September 5 and every day through Monday, September 2 we’ll be going team-by-team as we preview the new season. Be sure to come back here every afternoon as we look at a new team and get your ready for the 2024 season. We’ll cover off-season changes, the fantasy prospects, and the prediction for how the team will fare this season.
The Eagles started the 2023 season hot, looking like one of the best teams in the NFC. It didn’t last. After starting 10-1, the Eagles hit the skids. The team finished 1-5 to end the season 11-6 and a Wild Card. In that game, the Eagles lost to the Buccaneers ending their season in the playoffs’ first round. In the off-season, the team underwent changes meant to take a talented squad further in 2024. Let’s dive in.
Off-Season Changes
The Eagles made splashes at the coordinator positions, bringing in Kellen Moore to handle the offense and Vic Fangio to handle the defense. The Eagles’ biggest loss was the retirement of center Jason Kelce. Among other players, the Eagles had a few role players depart. The biggest loss was D’Andre Swift, who led the rushing attack in 2023. But the Eagles had an answer for that, signing Saquon Barkley away from the Giants. In six seasons in New York Barkley ran for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns. The Eagles also traded for Kenny Pickett to back up Jalen Hurts and added Mekhi Becton to the Offensive Line. On defense, the team added a pass rusher in Bryce Huff, linebacker Devin White, and brought back safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. The Eagles recently traded for Commanders’ wide receiver Jahan Dotson as well.
In the draft, the Eagles put the focus on the secondary, grabbing Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean with the first two picks. The two corners give the Eagles’ defense some weapons. With a Third-Round pick, the team grabbed edge Jaylx Hunt. Later in the draft, the team added some pieces on offense. The Eagles spent a Fourth-Round pick on Will Shipley to bolster the running back room and a Fifth Round selection on receiver Ainias Smith.
Fantasy Prospects
It begins with Hurts, who was a QB1 in 2023. With Barkley he might not have to take as many goalline carries, but he’s still a talented QB with a good team. I like him as a QB1. I like Barkley, too. He’s a perfect fit for the offense and Moore. He’s a Top 12 option at running back.
In the passing game, the team has A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Both were good in 2023, with Brown a Top 10 receiver and Smith WR18. I suspect they’ll both be great again. I like Brown as a WR1 and Smith as a WR2. At tight end, Dallas Goedert is a solid weapon. I like him as a low-end TE1. The biggest question is the addition of Dotson. He figures to be a clear No. 3 receiver, but what about fantasy? For now, I’m not bullish on big figures. He could have some deep league flex value.
Prediction
The Eagles looked like the class of the NFC until the last quarter of the season. With new playcallers and added weapons on both sides of the ball, the team is ready to go further. And I think they will. I like the Eagles to win the NFC East again and make another playoff run.
