In 1996, the disaster film Twister opened in theaters and became an instant classic, earning over 495 million dollars at the box office. Over thirty years later, Joseph Kosinski and Mark L. Smith teamed together to bring us Twisters. Lee Isaac Chung directs the film and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell. I share my thoughts on the film and let you know if it’s worth checking out.

Plot: Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better.

One of my biggest problems with this movie is that it tries a little too hard in the story to be like the original. It doesn’t do enough to stand out on its own, and in the places that it does try to replicate the original, it falls short. It suffers significantly by forcing unneeded stories on us that leave you uninterested. With a summer blockbuster, you really just want to turn off your brain, and this script doesn’t allow that. You can blend story and blockbusters, but if one doesn’t work, you can make the overall film fail.

Overall, Twisters was a bit of a letdown because of the lack of chemistry with our leads, a script that didn’t come together, and not enough tornadoes. The original put you on the edge of your seat, this never once made me feel uncomfortable. If you happen to check it out, make sure you see it on the biggest screen as the sound pops really wellout.

One response to “Twisters Movie Review – An Underwhelming attempt at a summer blockbuster”

  1. A great review. I had a chance to see this movie recently and really enjoyed it. It’s a perfect summer blockbuster that captures a natural disaster. I thought it was a massive improvement upon the first movie which I found overrated. It found a balance between spectacle and storytelling that was missing from the original.

Here’s my thoughts on the 1996 movie:
