Merry Christmas everyone! If you’re a football fan, you’ve got to be excited about spending Christmas Day with an NFL triple-header to end Week 16. Below I have a preview of all three Christmas Day games, but first let’s consider what we learned on Sunday.
The Buccaneers are taking control of the NFC South
It’s been a long road for the Buccaneers. The team took an early lead in the division with a 3-1 start. But a mid-season slump had them fading from the race. Now, the Buccaneers are hot again. The team is 8-7, with sole possession of first place and two games left to play. Baker Mayfield is playing well, Rachaad White is going strong, and Mike Evans has another 1,000-yard season. The Buccaneers look like a force in the NFC South and in the NFC playoff picture.
The Bills are back in it
A few weeks ago, the Bills were just 6-6 and looked like they’d been left for dead. Now, the team has won three straight and if the playoffs started today, they’d be in the race. Better yet, the Bills still have a shot at the AFC East title. If the Bills win out and the Dolphins stumble next week, the Bills could make it all the way back to the top of the division. It’s a big season-ending run for a team that looked lost at the mid-point of the season.
It’s going to be a tight race in the NFC
As we turn toward the final two games of the season, seven teams in the NFC have seven or eight wins. Only three will make the playoffs. That will make for a fierce battle down the stretch as the teams compete for the NFC South title and the final two Wild Card slots. It’s going to be an exciting battle as the teams jockey for position in the post-season.
Now, on to the Christmas Day preview.
Kansas City Chiefs (9-5) at Las Vegas Raiders (6-8)
The Chiefs are 9-5 and still in the running for the Top Seed in the AFC. They want to win the AFC West first, which can happen with a win. The Raiders, meanwhile, have shown some signs of life since moving on from Josh McDaniels. A win against the Chiefs would go a long way toward Antonio Pierce making his case to remain the Raiders’ coach into 2024.
For fantasy, the Chiefs have some automatic starts in Patrick Mahomes at quarterback and Travis Kelce at tight end. In the backfield, Isaih Pacheco is returning from injury and holds RB2 appeal, while Rashee Rice has WR2 appeal. For the Raiders, Josh Jacobs is a low-end RB1. I also like both Davante Adams and Jakobi Myers as starts at receiver. Aidan O’Connell is a low-end QB2 option for me.
I’m taking the Chiefs to get the win in this one.
New York Giants (5-9) at Philadelphia Eagles (10-4)
The Eagles have lost three straight, but a win here gets them back on track. The Eagles could move back into first place in the NFC East and remain in the running for the NFC’s top seed. The Giants, meanwhile, are happy to play the role of spoiler. They could do that with a win.
For fantasy, for the Giants, Saquon Barkley is a solid start at RB. He’s got RB1 upside. At tight end, Darren Waller is back and has some TE1 upside. I’d start him, too. For the Eagles, I love Jalen Hurts this week. He’s a Top 12 option at QB for me. I’m also starting receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, and I’d start Dallas Goedert at tight end. In the backfield, I’d start D’Andre Swift as an RB2.
I’m taking the Eagles in this one.
Baltimore Ravens (11-3) at San Francisco 49ers (11-3)
This is the best game on today’s slate, and probably the best game of Week 16. The Ravens are the top seed in the AFC while the 49ers are the top seed in the NFC. Whoever wins will have bragging rights in a game that could be a Super Bowl preview.
For the Ravens, Lamar Jackson is a start at quarterback. It’s a tough matchup, but he has QB1 upside. In the backfield, I like Gus Edwards the best. He has a shot at a touchdown and is an RB2 for me. Among receivers, I like Zay Flowers as a WR3/4 and Isaiah Likely as a TE2 with upside.
For the 49ers, there are plenty of weapons to like. Brock Purdy remains a low-end QB1 option for me. I also like Christian McCaffrey as one of the best RBs in the game. Among receivers, I’m starting Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and I like George Kittle as a start at tight end.
I’m taking the 49ers in this one.
