It’s the most wonderful day of the year for NFL fans. While Christmas gets all the hype in the Fall, Thanksgiving is a day to sit around, eat plenty of good food and watch football all day. This year is no exception with three games spread throughout the day. Below is a preview of the matchups and this week’s picks!
Green Bay Packers (4-6) at Detroit Lions (8-2)
In year’s past, this would have been a huge divisional matchup. It still is, I suppose, but the Packers have limped along this season while the Lions look like one of the best teams in the NFC. The Lions are also at home, a place they’ve played well over the years on Thanksgiving. All that is a recipe for a possibly lop-sided opener.
The Packers are also dealing with plenty of injury concerns. Aaron Jones has a sprained MCL and is likely out. Meanwhile, Luke Musgrave, Jayden Reed, A.J. Dillon, Dontavyion Wicks and Josiah Deguara are all questionable. That is certainly something to watch. In terms of fantasy, I like Romeo Doubs as a WR3, while Christian Watson and Reed if he plays are flex options with upside. Wicks is more of a deep league option if he plays, while Jordan Love is a low-end QB2 for me.
For the Lions, Jared Goff had an awful game in Week 11, but I see a rebound coming. He’s a borderline QB1. In the backfield, I like both Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. They are both Top 24 options with great upside. Amon-Ra St. Brown is a WR1 and Sam LaPorta is a Top 12 option at tight end. I’m not bullish on other receivers, though Jameson Williams is a boom-or-bust flex option, particularly at home on Thanksgiving.
Washington Commanders (4-7) at Dallas Cowboys (7-3)
Another divisional battle and another game that could well be lopsided. The 10.5 point spread is earned, as the Cowboys have been winning by bunches thanks to a stout defense and an offense with upside. The Commanders can put up points, too, but the line has struggled to keep Sam Howell clean. That’s going to be a problem on Thanksgiving Day in Dallas.
For the Commanders, Howell is a QB2. Brian Robinson has been carrying the load, and with Antonio Gibson questionable, he has RB2 upside. That’s especially true as Robinson has been involved in the passing game lately. Among the receivers, there are plenty of options and it’s hard to know who will benefit. I trust Terry McLaurin the most, but he’s a lower-end WR2 for me given the way the Commanders are playing. With all 32 teams in action, I’m not bullish trusting Jahan Dotson or Logan Thomas.
For the Cowboys, Dak Prescott is a QB1 option and CeeDee Lamb is a WR1 option. Tony Pollard is an RB1 option and we’ll hope his touchdown streak continues. Jake Ferguson is a TE1 option for me. I’m not trusting any of the other Cowboys’ skill-position players. If you want a deep league dart throw, Brandin Cooks has been more involved of late.
San Francisco 49ers (7-3) at Seattle Seahawks (6-4)
The final game of the day is the best matchup, on paper at least. It’s also a divisional battle. The Seahawks are chasing a playoff spot and are the biggest NFC West challenge for the 49ers. But the Seahawks come in beat up, which isn’t a great sign.
Kenneth Walker got injured Sunday and is likely to miss, which is tough. Meanwhile, Geno Smith was injured Sunday and didn’t finish the game and D.K. Metcalf is dealing with a toe injury. If Smith plays, he’s a low-end QB2. If he misses, I want no part of Drew Lock. Given the matchup, Zack Charbonnet is a low-end RB2 for me, while Tyler Lockett is a WR2 and Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a WR3 if Metcalf misses. If Metcalf plays, he’s a WR3 for me given the injury and his up-and-down production.
For the 49ers, I like Brock Purdy as a QB2. In the backfield, Christian McCaffrey is a Top 5 option and should be in your lineup. I like Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel all as plays. They all have talent and upside. It’s quite possible one or two miss their projection but they could also explode. You have to play them.
