This episode of Only Murders in the Building begins with Uma (Jackie Hoffman) narrating. Her best friend Bunny was murdered last season, making Uma’s pessimistic view of life even stronger. People may leave, but things last forever is her motto, which explains why she has so many baubles and items in her apartment. Charles is at the same diner as Uma, and she invites Charles to a conversation when she sees he’s alone. Everyone knows that Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are a little trio, so she was surprised to catch one without the other.

Charles admits he quit the musical and that the three of them are on the outs. Uma explains her philosophy that people are one of three things: alive, dead, or dead to me, and Bunny never apologized to her. This is also when Charles discovers that Uma stole Ben’s hankie after he had fallen.

Oliver is auditioning people to replace Charles in the musical, but it is going poorly. Cliff, the dorky young producer, stress dances, and his mom is irritated at the entire situation. Charles-Haden Savage was the biggest name in the show. She tries to convince Oliver to ask Charles to rejoin the production, but he refuses. After Cliff pulls some strings, he gets Matthew Broderick to audition and nails it. Charles gets caught peeping on the audition, though he vehemently denies that’s what he was doing.

As he is sulking, Charles looks through the hankies he was given by the cast again. He decides to go to Uma, ask for Ben’s hankie, and use it as a peace offering for Oliver and Mabel. She admits she sold the hankie to a CoBro who is at the auction Mabel is attending for $7,000.

Despite their initial pleasant conversation over Gut Milk, Matthew ends up being the worst thing for Oliver. He is a hardcore method actor in the show, and despite being perfect at the song, he practices it 38 times deep into the night and is concerned about where the character was born and raised. In a cute cameo, Oliver talks to Mel Brooks on FaceTime about Matthew’s difficult behavior since they had previously worked together in The Producers on Broadway. Mel tells Oliver that he is screwed because he told Matthew he was open to his ideas and opinions.

At this point, it is 2 a.m., and Matthew is still annoying and overthinking. Oliver has enough and yells at him to go home. Once again, Charles is at the front door peeking in, missing his friend. Oliver has never been so happy to see Charles. He immediately fires Matthew and rehires Charles, who is down to rejoin the production. The two friends share some late-night gut milk together.

While the guys are reconnecting, Mabel is with her neighbor Theo who is helping her pack and listening to her vent about her situation with the men and the murder. He suggests she talk to Ben’s brother/manager who he heard is having a silent auction in Ben’s apartment to sell some of his movie things, and they go together. The biggest of Ben’s successes was CoBro, which was a superhero franchise that Ben supposedly created himself. While Mabel doesn’t put much stock into those movies, Theo explains that CoBro is about shedding labels. When Mabel sees Dickie at the auction, she tries to talk to him about Ben’s death, but he immediately shuts down any conversation. He claims she is just trying to make money off his deceased brother and finds it gross. Although, he is doing the exact same things with all his possessions.

A short time later, Mabel apologizes to Dickie about her persistence to solve the case. Even though he thinks Ben’s stalker Gregg killed him, he accepts her apology. Dickie opens up to her about the fact that Ben was the miracle baby their parents had after they had already adopted him under the assumption that they couldn’t have children. He was jealous of his brother because Ben screwed up all the time, but Dickie held him together. The key confession he makes to Mabel is that Ben set his clocks 20 minutes back, so he was fashionably late everywhere he went. Although Dickie covered himself up well, the way he flipped and reversed Mabel’s valid concerns was slimy. I also think he bought the hankie from Uma to cover his tracks.

When Mabel gets back to her apartment with Theo and Tobert she recognizes that Ben’s watch says 12:06, which gave the police the time of death since it broke during the fall down the elevator shaft. Since she recently learned about the 20 minutes late rule, she figures out it was actually 12:26, which exonerates Gregg the stalker, who Mabel never felt killed Ben. Theo also shows her the flyer for the auction with the first CoBro comic book page. They see where the “B” for Ben is filled in from an “R” for Richard (Dickie), Ben’s brother. This is when Mabel puts it together that Dickie is a suspect. She starts recording the podcast alone with Tobert’s equipment, but she becomes overwhelmed with the setup and opts to do it on her phone. This is also the first time she has recorded the podcast without her buddies.

The episode ends with Charles getting Oliver to admit what he found at Loretta’s apartment. Charles, ready to connect with the entire group, suggests they give the notebook to Mabel as an apology clue. When the pair go to Mabel’s apartment, they find that she is no longer there, and another woman is in her place. They also find out she has posted a podcast on her own. Although, how can they be surprised? She is the only one who has been working on the case. The detective from the beginning of the season decides to reopen the Glenroy case after he listens to Mabel’s podcast.

Loretta is still suspicious, and I think she played a role in Ben’s death, but I’m not sure what it was. Now that Dickie is a suspect, I’m worried he is just a distraction before the final reveal. Also, the fact that Tobert hasn’t even been on the radar as a potential suspect is quite weird since he was profiting off of Ben as a documentary subject. Finally, why would they have Uma narrate if she weren’t a suspect? There are still 3 more episodes left this season, enough for everything we think we know to be upended.
