The romantic novel by Casey McQuiston, Red, White & Royal Blue has been turned into a film and released on Prime Video. It was adapted for the big screen by Matthew Lopez and Ted Malawer with the former also directing the film.

Red, White & Royal Blue follows the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz, the first son of the United States, and young Prince Henry, who fall in love. With their high-profile lives, they must keep their relationship a secret. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry and Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont Diaz.

Prince Henry is on the verge of getting married, and at a wedding, Alex is there to show his support which leads to the two saying some things about each other to the people they are there with that end up criticizing one another. The two end up getting into an argument, and they end up knocking over the massive wedding cake, which lands on top of them.

As a result, Alex is forced by his mother’s staff to head back to London to undo all the damage that transpired. He is not only forced to go over there to make amends but must show the media that he and Henry are great friends. The two do as they are told, get along rather well, and start to see things slightly different about their past run-ins.

This movie has a witty script that blends together romance and comedy in a balanced way that makes both layers shine. That said, as razor-sharp of a screenplay as it is, none of it works without the strong work from our two leads, Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez. The electric chemistry between the two ignites this firey romance that delights, but for me, the back-and-forth banter within the comedy layers stood out from both of their work.

Only two things about this movie didn’t work for me. First is the run time as it slightly runs longer than it should’ve. This should’ve been about an hour and a half, maybe an hour and forty-five minutes. Second, Uma Thurman’s accent was something, and every time she spoke, it was somewhat cringeworthy.

Overall, Red, White & Royal Blue is a moving romantic comedy that clicks on all cylinders. It’s filled with quite a bit of heart and some truly funny banter between our two leads. I wouldn’t mind seeing another film with Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez leading the way. I highly recommend checking this out.
