Extraction 2: Directed by Sam Hargrave

SYNOPSIS: Tasked with extracting a family who is at the mercy of a Georgian gangster, Tyler Rake infiltrates one of the world’s deadliest prisons in order to save them. But when the extraction gets hot, and the gangster dies in the heat of battle, his equally ruthless brother tracks down Rake and his team to Sydney, in order to get revenge.
Believe it or not, I had a very good time with the original Extraction film when it was released in 2020. That could be the fact that there wasn’t a lot of quality content out during that time, or it could actually be a very good action movie. I tend to believe it’s actually a quality action movie. Having Sam Hargrave as the director was a genius revelation and I feel that he took it even further with the second film. With all of that being said, I enjoyed the first and was looking forward to the sequel quite a bit.
It might be hard to believe, but I firmly believe this film tops the original. Everyone is talking about the one-take sequence, but that isn’t even what I am referring to. The writing here is actually pretty good. It hits a lot of classic action cliches, the villain is pretty boring and not very fleshed out, but the character development is really good. All of our main characters are fleshed out further from the first and given important things to do throughout. There is no main character pushed to the side and I really liked that. The performances continued to get the job done and Chris Hemsworth is a true action star.

Of course though, the action is the true star of the show. The one-take sequence is absolutely incredible. It’s something we’ve never seen before and something we will probably never see again. Having Hargrave there for the entire process as stuntman turned director is so valuable. The action never ceases to amaze me. Every sequence is choreographed, shot and executed to perfection. That’s why you watch a movie like this. I can not wait to see where this franchise goes and I trust everyone involved to continue to give us high quality action films.
FINAL: Extraction 2 is a very impressive action film from Netflix. One of the very rare wins from the streamer with nice performances, really solid writing and the kick ass action that you have come to love. The villain is very generic and it can get cliche at times, but overall anyone can have a damn good time. The powers that be are absolutely setting up a franchise with these characters and in this case, I am all for that. Give me as much Tyler Rake as Chris Hemsworth is willing to give.
