In addition to the awards winners, below are my personal picks for the top 5 of the 2023 Tribeca Festival:
- EVERY BODY (pictured above) – Director Julie Cohen explores the lives of three intersex people (Sean Saifa Wall, Alicia Roth Weigel, River Gallo) in this groundbreaking documentary. The biggest takeaway is that doctors are too quick to perform surgeries to make intersex babies fit a binary mold instead of waiting for the child to grow up and make their own decision. 10/10
- MARINETTE – Director Virginie Verrier aptly executes this biopic of French soccer player Marinette Pichon with an amazing performance from Garance Marillier (Raw) in the title role.
- GLORIA GAYNOR: I WILL SURVIVE – The documentary covers not only Gaynor’s disco period, but shows her on a quest to make a gospel album as well. Gaynor’s story is empowering and has a triumphant ending.
- TAKE CARE OF MAYA – Out on Netflix June 19th, this documentary follows the Kowalski family as their daughter Maya is struck by medical problems. Shedding light on the “child welfare industry”, this film isn’t to be missed, especially for families facing similar issues.
- CHASING CHASING AMY – This personal story from Sav Rodgers takes a bold look at several issues including abuse and transitioning. It looks at the characters from a familiar Kevin Smith film and re-evaluates everything.
