Take Care of Maya
exposes how the child welfare industry will often be quick to take children with particular kinds of medical problems away from their families.  The documentary follows the Kowalski family in Florida, using their testimony to show what a kind and loving family they are. When their daughter Maya has to go to the hospital (Johns Hopkins), they aren’t familiar with her condition (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome) and she is placed with a social worker who was accused of abusing a child. The failings of the system go on and on and are well-documented by the mother, Beata Kowalski.

While focusing on the Kowalskis, the doc also shows other families were victimized by the system in order to show that the problem is more widespread than previously thought possible.

The film is definitely worth taking a look at how the system destroys families and to make sure you have a plan in action if any red flags occur. The Kowalskis still have not received a settlement as their case keeps getting delayed.

The film will be released on Netflix globally on June 19, 2023
