Dan Rather started off in radio in 1954 at KRTH in Houston, Texas. Often ad-libbing without a script, it would prepare him for his eventual role as an anchorman. Being in Dallas when the Kennedy assassination happened helped to propel Rather to a much bigger position. The documentary follows Rather through the decades when he worked at CBS, covering the civil rights movement and the fall of the Berlin Wall, and when he didn’t back down from confronting political leaders such as Richard Nixon and George Bush.
Having rheumatic fever as a child and sometimes coming under physical attack, it is a wonder that Dan Rather is still with us at all. The documentary doesn’t hesitate to cover his post-CBS journey as a constant voice on social media.
Interviewing family members, and journalists such as Ronan Farrow and Margaret Sullivan, the film provides a comprehensive look at his life and career. Rather showed the truth about war and signed off each night with one word: “courage”. This documentary is recommend for generations, old and new, who will appreciate the stalwart figure of Dan Rather.
