Mike Rutherford, band member of Genesis recently appeared on a BBC breakfast show and spoke about the health difficulties that Phil Collins, the lead singer and drummer, in the band, was experiencing and the effects these were having on the band.
It has become really difficult for him to play with the band. Rutherford said in a different interview that, “He’s much more immobile than he used to be…”
On the band’s farewell tour Collins was seen using a stick to get around and his son, Nic, was with him to help with the drums if and when necessary. But according to Rutherford, “…at the tour he was in good spirits.”
Genesis and the early days of Rock
The British rock band started out in the early 1970’s with Peter Gabriel being the lead singer. He left the band in the 80’s and Phil Collins took over his position when the band became more of a pop band.
Also, part of the band is Mike Rutherford who plays guitars, base and Tony Banks on keyboards. The group is undoubtedly one of the most successful of all time.
It was at the last gig last year when Collins said on stage “Tonight is a very special night. It’s the last stop of our tour. And it’s the last show for Genesis…After tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”
The band may do another gig but it is unlikely that Collins will make an appearance. But Tony Banks has said that the band will not do another gig together, neither any studio work.
He reported that “Phil Collins is no longer in the state to perform”. Collins has said “We’re all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed. I think just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.” Maybe staying at home and playing for those Juicy Stakes poker bonuses will make it somewhat worthwhile.
Rumors began to circle way back in 2011 that Collins was planning to retire because of health issues but Collins said this was not true but did then say he wanted to spend more time with his family and less time involved in his work.
What does the future look like for Phil Collins
During a conversation between his son, Nic, and Rolling Stone Magazine last year Nic talked about his father’s plans for the future. He said “I also do think that my dad is probably excited about the next step in his life. Music has given him so much, but he’s also given so much to it. His career has pretty much determined his life for the past 50 years. I think for him to be able to take a step back and not have that pressure that he’s had for decades, I think is going to be nice for him. For me, I think that was that, but who knows?”
Collins’ legacy
Collins achieved so much with Genesis and also alone, as a solo artist. He has achieved unprecedented success and has been an inspiration to many young musicians on their own personal journeys. He has literally millions of fans all over the globe and his legacy will carry on with, and through them.
Collins has received so many awards during his long career including Oscars and Grammy’s and is recognized as one of the most outstanding musical talents of all time.
His approach to drumming and his talent were an inspiration to many young and upcoming drummers. According to his son, Nic he does miss the drums. Following the last gig in 2022 Nic remarked “I know that my dad misses playing the drums, and I know the fans wish they could see him. I wish he could play as well.”
