Eight years ago, Timothee Chalamet heard his name on Oscar nomination morning. Since then, he has been on a tear with outstanding performances in Lady Bird, Beautiful Boy, Dune, and Bones and All. However, none of them led to Chalamet’s nomination by the Academy. Could this year be different? I examined Chalamet’s chances of hearing his name on January 17.

If it were up to me, Chalamet would hear his name being called for his groundbreaking performance as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two. I will share with you below a scene in that movie that highlights why I am in that belief. That said, if Chalamet hears his name Oscar nomination morning, it will be for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

Chalamet spent four years preparing for his role as Bob Dylan. He learned to sing and play the harmonica and guitar to prepare for the musical aspect of the role. Director James Mangold made it even harder for Chalamet and the cast by making them perform live. Chalamet’s ability to capture all three of these things within the film is one of the first reasons he should be nominated.

As the film progressed, we saw Bob Dylan’s evolution. He began to perform what he wanted on the stage rather than what the studio heads wanted. How Chalamet captured this was nothing short of remarkable. From how he carried himself at the start of the movie to that final performance on stage, Chalamet embodied this beautifully. You can be equally impressed with his singing and how he carried himself like Dylan.

I mentioned that scene from Dune: Part Two as why Chalamet should be nominated for that performance. On the flip side, Chalamet has a scene in this that will result in him being nominated by the Academy. I wrote about it in my review of the film about how the scene reminded me of a scene from Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis that led to Austin Butler getting nominated.

We saw Elvis hit the stage and told “not to perform” certain songs to cause an uproar. Regardless of what they wanted, Elvis did his own thing, and we saw Butler ramp up the charm and deliver within this scene. While the moment wasn’t as flashy, Dylan was tired of hearing how everyone wanted him to perform the songs they wanted. So, instead, he hit the stage and played his music at the festival, and the crowd and the people who ran the festival went wild. The calm, cool demeanor we see Chalamet ooze in that scene is his “Oscar” moment, which is what will lead him to hear his name nomination in the morning.
