The final game of Week 15 comes tonight as the Philadelphia Eagles and the Seattle Seahawks battle. Both are in need of a win to build their case for the playoffs. It’s also possible both will be playing backup quarterbacks. More on the game in a minute. First, let’s consider what else we learned from this weekend.
The Chargers are starting over
For the past few seasons, the Los Angeles Chargers have been a talented team that haven’t been able to deliver. The common denominator seemed to be Head Coach Brandon Staley. That came to a head on Thursday night as the Chargers gave up 63 points to the Raiders, falling to 5-9 on the season. On Friday, the Chargers made the move that’s been coming for a while, firing Staley. It’s a lost cause in 2023 as the Chargers are out of the race, especially with Justin Herbert done for the season. But the roster remains talented, making it an attractive opening this off-season.
The NFC South will be a wild ride
With three weeks to go, there’s still plenty of intrigue. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got a big win in Week 15 to move to 7-7. They own the tiebreaker and sit in first. The New Orleans Saints won to move to 7-7 as well. They are also in contention for a Wild Card spot outright. The Atlanta Falcons, curiously, lost to the Carolina Panthers, scoring just seven points. The Falcons aren’t out of it yet, but at 6-8 they have work to do. These last three weeks will tell the tale.
The AFC Wild Card race is going to be fun
We saw some movement in Week 15, but there is still a pack of teams competing for a shot at the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost their third straight, and Denver Broncos took a step back, each suffering a loss. The Cleveland Browns, meanwhile, moved to nine wins and look to be right on pace to make the field. The Houston Texans and Cincinnati Bengals got big come-from-behind wins to move to 8-6, while the Colts won despite a battery of injuries. Then there’s the Bills, who continue to hang around, coming up with a huge win against the Cowboys. With three weeks left, it’s a heck of a race.
Now, on to the Monday night game.
Philadelphia Eagles (10-3) at Seattle Seahawks (6-7)
This promises to be a fun and meaningful game. The Eagles lost two games in a row and entered the week as the No. 5 seed in the NFC. A win moves them back into first in the NFC East and gives them a shot at the No. 1 seed still. The Seahawks, meanwhile, face a more dire situation. At 6-7 the Seahawks are fading from the playoff picture. They need wins to hang around.
The trick is one or both teams could be missing their starting quarterback in this one. That’s bad news for these teams and, potentially, for fantasy players. Jalen Hurts is battling an illness that saw his status downgraded Saturday. Geno Smith is battling a groin injury that caused him to miss Week 14.
For the Eagles, you’re starting D’Andre Swift, though moderating expectations. The same goes for A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert, especially is Hurts is out. If Hurts is out, and you held out hope, have a backup plan. Marcus Mariota would get the start and is the more appealing backup option in this game.
For the Seahawks, both Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet should be in play. Both have potential but it’s not a great matchup. Among receivers, I like D.K. Metcalf the best, but Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba should be flex worthy options. If you held out for Smith, have a backup option. Drew Lock would get the start in his place.
I’m taking the Eagles in this one.
