Wolfwalkers: Apple Original Review

I would like to thank Apple TV + for allowing me to watch and review this film.

Director:  Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart

Writer(s):  Jericca Cleland (story and script consultant), Will Collins (screenplay)

Cast: Honor Kneafsey, Eva Whittaker & Sean Bean

Synopsis: A young apprentice hunter and her father journey to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night.

As many of you know Apple has decided to dip their toes into the streaming market with Apple TV+. They have slowly been building their library of original content since the platform launched a little over a year ago. From titles such as The Morning Show, Dickinson, and now what I consider to be one of the best animated movies of the year, Wolfwalkers.

There have only been a few animated films that have caught my attention this year and Wolfwalkers deserves a spot in this year’s ranking. On the surface, this movie might seem predictable especially with the main characters Robyn and Mebh but in its defense, a lot of animated features are. It’s not how predictable the story is but how well it’s executed and this film delivers on that front.

The story is straightforward but a powerful one. I constantly found myself feeling empathy for the trials and tribulations that Robyn, Mebh, and Robyn’s father goes through. The villain is very one dimensional but I think a lot of its issues can be left unnoticed due to its hand-drawn animation style, which is a rare sight to see in the film industry today.

Final Thoughts: Wolfwalkers is a magnificent story that is ideal for animated film lovers. The cast’s performance is organic and the hand-drawn visuals will leave you captivated. The film is set to arrive in select theaters on November 13th and Apple TV + on December 11th.

My Score:

Rating: 4 out of 5.
