Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this, I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with a rating of the movie and short overall thoughts.
On the docket today, the Hulu Original Film, Palm Springs.
The film starts at this slow pace which if people don’t buy into the film, they might turn it off. While there are funny moments within the first act, I am not sure they are enough to appease the average moviegoer.
After a rough 30 minutes, the pace picks up a lot. The foundation of where we are going is starting to be built. Nyles (Andy Samberg) comes out of his shell a little more here, and the banter between him and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) starts to set precedent. Samberg and Milioti have this charm about them that reels you into their relationship.
How often do we see the rinse recycle repeat of these rom-com movies and just want to scream? It’s different, unique, and a whole lot of fun. I found myself particularly keen on the writing of Sarah. She was hands down my favorite part of this movie. I loved the layers of which we saw from her character. We went from this quirky immature girl to this strong woman trying to make it happen. As good as the writing, it only works because of the performance of Cristin Milioti.
J.K. Simmons is a national treasure, that’s all I will say about him.
Samberg is one of the funniest comedic actors on the planet. I will say I do think he plays the same person in every film but I’ll take it because he is hilarious. He knows how to pick roles that will showcase his ability to the fullest.
The layering of the film is an interesting choice because that first act is a tough watch but when it transitions into that second act it takes off. The film takes the typical rom-com and adds some fun different layers to it. I don’t think we will see another film like this, this year.
