Continuing my trend of the “Best of” in film of 2019, I will give you my favorite movie quotes from the year.
“I Hope My Death Makes More Cents Than My Life.” – Arthur Fleck (Joker)
“Joylessly masterbating to a dead deer” – Knives Out
“You’ve got to kill the person you were born to be in order to become the person you want to be.” – Wilson, (Rocketman)
‘You look a tiger in the eye. And trust without fear. That’s what it is to be a woman.’ – Rosie (Jojo Rabbit)
“Each of us is more than the worst thing that we’ve ever done.” – Bryan Stevenson (Just Mercy)
“If you sit on a shelf for the rest of your life, you’ll never find out.” – Woody (Toy Story 4)
- 6. “Dolemite is my name and fucking up mother fuckers is my game.” & “Shoot for the moon, and if you miss it, cling on to a motherfucking star.” – Rudy Ray Moore (Dolemite is my name)
Dolemite was equal parts funny and inspirational. Rudy Ray Moore believed in himself when no one else did, he bet on himself and won.
- 5. “The worst part of having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.” – Arthur Fleck (Joker)
- 4. I love you, 3000.
One of the most gut-wrenching words ever!!!!!! This scene was just a pile up of any already emotional ending of an amazing movie.
Not much else I could really add.
- 3. “That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life.” – Trudi (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood)
Rick Dalton just went absolutely nuts in his trailer after flubbing a few lines. He was not feeling himself, he was starting to feel like he was washed and that his career might have hit a screeching halt.
He delivers this beautiful montage of fantastic lines in which he even improved a little and when they cut, the director congratulated him on a fantastic scene.
But the next moments when Trudi walks over and delivers “That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life.” it felt like it was redemption.
We’ve all been to the place in which we didn’t think we had it anymore and we are subtlety reminded that we do, this scene was absolutely touching and wonderful.
- 2. Marriage Story Fight Scene
Every day I wake up and hope
you’re dead– Dead like–
If I could guarantee Henry would be OK, I’d hope you get an illness and then get hit by a car and DIE. – Charlie
The entire scene is absolutely packed with so much emotion and two heavyweight actors going toe to toe with beautifully written dialogue.
When Charlie snaps and crosses that line, he knew he was at no point of return but couldn’t stop saying the words about to come out of his mouth.
This was hands down one of the best scenes in any movie this year.
- 1. The only thing my father gave me of any value is pain, and you want to take that away. – Otis (Honey Boy)
The way Hedges delivered this line, in this very emotional but pivotal part of the film, ripped me in a million pieces.
Understanding that his dad provided him so much pain and if he let go of that pain, he had to let go of all the things that he felt connected him to his father.
It was a powerful and moving scene that not only moved me but resonated with my own version of my relationship with my own dad.
