Rosaline Review

Rosaline is a comedic retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The film follows Rosaline, played by Kaitlyn Dever, who finds out Romeo has stopped seeing her to date her cousin Juliet. If you want to get the most out of this film and enjoy it, I suggest looking at a recap of Romeo and Juliet to get a better understanding of some characters.

Rosaline was a very enjoyable film. I found the script and music to be very clever. The music had old songs and current songs but in a more classic old-fashioned period way. This film made me laugh quite a bit throughout for example at times the film felt like a play or a kid’s tv show or movie. The characters being overly dramatic or over the top. Another way of showing comedy was during a few sad or dramatic scenes where you don’t expect something funny to happen, it surprises you. I was surprised and not expecting one of the twists in this film, but enjoyed the twist. Sometimes throughout the film, you kind of feel like Juliet is annoying or not reasonable. This I thought was clever due to the fact Juliet is only 14 years old, so the film did well at portraying Juliet as a 14-year-old. The cast were all very good, especially Dever, who portrayed Rosaline very well, and also was good at being funny.

I did feel like one of the plot points between Rosaline and another character was very predictable at what was going to happen. Another thing I thought they could have done a bit better was the end they could have slowed down a little, or shown you a bit more of what happens, during fights. If you are looking for a film to relax or switch off to that’s not heavy going but is funny and enjoyable, unique and clever, then this film is for you!
