“The Conjuring 2” Film Review

As I debated my options on which film to review, I decided to base my review on my favorite Horror film. I want to discuss my thoughts on the horror genre, The Conjuring Universe, and why I consider The Conjuring 2 my favorite horror film.

I will start by confessing that the horror genre was always one I would shy away from as I was simply a ‘scaredy-cat’. I remember watching a few horrors when I was in school and would get terrible nightmares hence why I would never watch them, however, as my love for film grows I am much more tolerant of horror movies. I can always remember first watching The Conjuring 2, I was at a family gathering, and my family and, I all sat and put it on as a joke as we all were petrified, but from then on I was hooked.

The Conjuring Universe is a collection of horrors each linking with one another. Although not released in the correct order they chronologically follow as, The Nun (2018), Annabelle Creation (2017), Anabelle (2014), The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), and The Conjuring 2 (2016). I love it when one film can lead to a series of films. What I also love about this Universe is that they all have a link; they are not the same film with the same people. Although The Conjuring 2 is my favorite of them all. I am a fan of Annabelle and the first Conjuring movie. The Nun and Annabelle Comes Home are the only ones I wasn’t a fan of.

Why is The Conjuring 2 my favorite of the Universe? Of the six films I did happen to see this one first, although it does not coincide with the chronological order it does not matter. I love the story of this film, I love that both the conjurings are based on true stories as a much more frightening story. The Conjuring 2 tells the story of a single mother with four children who call on paranormal investigators after witnessing paranormal activities in her home, centering on one child.

(Janet Hodson – Possessed girl)

It’s a believable movie from start to finish and doesn’t tell a one-dimensional story, as it includes, paranormal activity, a possession, life in the seventies, skeptics, paranormal investigators, and the introduction of The Nun character. Although a lot is going on, it’s not overpowering or too busy. I love the characters of Ed and Lorraine Warren based on real-life paranormal investigators and their story is also portrayed to get that connection to the characters and truly understand their cases as though it were you.  It’s a gripping true tale with fabulous acting. I love the screenplay and direction by James Wan, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Chad Hayes, and Carey Hayes.

(Ed and Lorraine Warren – The Conjuring 2)

To conclude my review, although Horror isn’t my favorite genre, I watch many more horror movies nowadays especially with my sister who only watches horror! I find it’s difficult to find a horror that is both scary and tells a good story, that’s why I love The Conjuring 2 as it does this exceptionally. The Horror genre definitely does struggle but The whole Conjuring film series will always be top tier for me and I most definitely recommend watching.
