‘Pieces of a Woman’ Review

I would like to thank Netflix for allowing me to watch and review this film

Director: Kornél Mundruczó

Writer: Kata Wéber

Stars:  Vanessa Kirby, Shia LaBeouf, Ellen Burstyn

Synopsis: A grieving woman embarks on an emotional journey after the loss of her baby.

Pieces Of A Woman is one of the most emotional and personal stories I have watched in a long time. I went into this film completely blind. I had no prior knowledge about the plot and I’m relieved that I did. It was like discovering a movie that I didn’t know that I needed to watch. Which is always the best kind in my opinion.

This film is about loss and hate and much has it is about love and life, and most importantly how meaningful this story could be for other people. The themes of love and hate balance the atmosphere of the film in a beautiful way. At times it does feel like a slow burn but it is necessary to the plot.

The performance of the cast was incredible beyond belief. The intimacy between Venssas Kirby and Shia Leboeuf was so organic I couldn’t believe how in sync they were. Especially Vanessa Kirby and Ellen Burstyn. Shia LaBeouf is there from the get-go but as the film advances, he takes more or a back seat to the rest of the cast.

I have seen grief portrayed in film before but never in this way. The score fits in with the film perfectly. If there was one word I would use to describe Pieces Of A Woman it would be melancholy. It delivered a feeling of sorrow that has kept me thinking about this film days later.

Final: This is one of the best Netflix’s films of the year and of my personal favorites as the awards season slowly approaches. Pieces Of A Woman Premiers on Netflix on January 7th.

My Score:

Rating: 5 out of 5.
